A New Processing Plant for Semican
December 6th 2022 – Since June 2022, the development of Semican, located in Princeville, has taken a new turn with the launch of its new food processing plant, now fully operational!
The result of an investment of nearly $7.2 million, this state-of-the-art plant is HACCP-certified for food processing intended for human consumption, ECOCERT-certified for organic products, and KOSHER-certified. It currently features a processing line for hulled and pearl barley, with an oat processing line set to launch next summer.
With this investment, Semican continues its vertical integration, from seed to plate, leveraging synergies for the benefit of both nutrition and agricultural producers. For over 40 years, the company has been engaged in seed production and crop purchasing. It also operates its own Research Center, dedicated to developing unique seed varieties adapted to the North American climate. Naturally, its leadership sought to close the loop by processing and enhancing the crops grown by its partner farmers.
Committed to its mission of “Feeding the planet, one seed at a time,” Semican is taking another step forward by adding value to locally harvested grains, qualifying them for human consumption, the brewing industry, and animal feed. As a pioneer in grain processing in Quebec, Semican has developed a unique business model that ensures full traceability and a reliable supply chain for its plant. “We know exactly where each seed comes from,” says Yves [Last Name], highlighting Semican’s commitment to quality and transparency.
Aligning with government priorities on food security, “Semican aims to play an active role in the growing plant-protein sector, addressing environmental challenges and food security issues,” adds Philippe Charlebois.
