  • Asteraceae family
  • Taproot and abundant secondary root system can grow deep into the soil
  • Very rapid growth in warm temperatures; not very competitive
  • Rigid stem can support other climbing plant species
  • Susceptible to Sclerotinia, terminate when crop has reached full bloom

  • Hydrophyllaceae family
  • Photosensitive seed does not germinate when exposed to light; avoid seeding too deploy
  • Slow growth initially and not very competitive, but abundant foliage and competitive once well established
  • Taproot and fine, well-developed secondary root system enhance soil structure
  • Nematicidal plant and useful for aphid control as it attracts the insect’s predators
