Fall Cereals

Features

  • Primarily rye
  • Seeded in spring, they provide lasting soil coverage without heading out
  • Seed in fall for live plant cover over the winter
  • Can be rolle flat or chemically terminated in spring for no-till seeding
  • Take note that a terminated fall rye cover crop has an allelopathic effect on corn

  • 67 to 134 lb/acre or 75 to 150 kg/ha

Italian Ryegrass

Features

  • Extremely dense root system throughout the soil profile
  • Good shade tolerance
  • Seed early when intercropping with cord (V4-V5)
  • Grows best in fine- to medium-textured soils
  • Annual crop (westerwold or alternative): Heads the same year as planted, can grow to a height of 40 to 80 cm
  • Biennial crop (Italian or non-alternative): Leafy plant that heads the year after planting, can grow to a height of 40 cm

Seeding rate

  • 13 to 18 lb/acre or 15 to 20 kg/ha

  • -8°C to -15°C
